Betty Jean Goldsberry
Betty Jean Goldsberry, 90, died Wednesday, August 16, 2017 at the Lone Tree Retirement Center in Meade, Kansas. She was born February 10, 1927 in Holton, Kansas the daughter of Fred Walton and Geneva R. Stoltz Walton Cook.
Betty attended school in Plains, Kansas where she graduated from high school. On October 19, 1947, she married Max R. Goldsberry in Topeka, Kansas. They lived in Meade until 1951 when they moved to Garden City. Betty recently moved back to Meade in January of 2017. A homemaker, Betty was one of the first women realtors in Garden City where she sold real estate in the 1970’s for Miller Ins. Co. She was a member of the Community Congregation Church in Garden City. Betty also was very instrumental in starting the RSVP program in Garden City, and she helped organize the Veterans Flag Site at the Garden City Municipal Airport. She also worked many hours as a volunteer with various programs in Garden City. Betty enjoyed square dancing, singing, going to auctions, and volunteering her time to help others.
Survivors include her three children Mark R. & wife Shirley Goldsberry of Meade, KS, Stuart G. “Gil” Goldsberry of Milwaukie, Oregon, and Deborah Morgan of Garden City, KS; a brother Dennis R. Cook of Ocean City, Washington; 8 Grandchildren; 9 Great-Grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Betty is preceded in death by her husband Max who died on November 19, 1995. She is also preceded in death by her father Fred Walton; her mother Geneva R. Stoltz Walton Cook; her second father Harold Cook; a Daughter-In-Law Jennifer Goldsberry; a brother Donald Wayne Cook; a sister Donna Lea Broce; and an Uncle Herman Jack Stoltz.
A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 23, 2017 at Valley View Cemetery in Garden City. A per Betty’s request, there will be no public visitation. The family suggests memorials given to the Lone Tree Retirement Center or to the Finney County Museum both in care of Garnand Funeral Home of Garden City.
