Obituary for Wilfred Eugene Schrepel

Wilfred Eugene Schrepel, 84, died April 13, 2017, at the Brookdale Bearcreek Senior Living Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado following a brief illness.

He leaves his loving wife of 61 years, Judith Karen (Hohner) Schrepel: his two sons, Douglas Schrepel and Bradley Schrepel and their wives, Laurie Clauss and Tara (Roberts) Schrepel; his sister, Lila McDermed; his brother, Milton Schrepel, Jr. and his wife Karen Schrepel; five grandchildren, Caitlin Schrepel, Jordan Schrepel, Marissa Schrepel, Alanna Schrepel, and Wyatt Schrepel; one great-granddaughter, Eliot Hendricks; and many close friends. Family and friends were the most cherished part of life for Wilfred.

Born April 2, 1933, on a farm in eastern Barton County, Kansas, where he was raised, he was the son of Milton and Elsie (Boyle) Schrepel. After graduation from high school in Claflin, Kansas in 1951, Wilfred attended Fort Hays Kansas State College, graduating in 1957 with a degree in Education. During the years of 1954 through 1956, Wilfred served in the Army 789 Anti-air Artillery Battalion serving in Ft. Stewart, Georgia. He earned his Masters of Arts in Education from Colorado State College in Greeley, Colorado in 1961.

He met his wife, Judith, in college and they were married August 26, 1956, in the First Unit-ed Methodist Church in Ulysses. Following college, Judy and Wilfred lived and taught for five years in Norton, Kansas, where their sons were born. In 1962, the family moved to Ulysses, Kansas, where Wilfred and Judy lived until 2017 when they moved to Colorado Springs, Colorado to be closer to family. Wilfred not only took pride in his community, but truly relished the friends he made during his lifetime in Kansas.

Wilfred taught Language Arts at Ulysses High School for over 30 years until his retirement in 1993. He enjoyed teaching and being involved in the production of high school musicals. He was the “Voice of the Tigers” and was the announcer for nearly all the varsity games played in Ulysses from 1962 to 1993.

With a strong service ethic, he was a longtime member of The Lions Club and a lifelong member of Grace Lutheran Church. He was a member of the Grant County Teacher’s Association, the Southwest Kansas Irrigation Association, the Southwest Kansas Royalties Association, and Kappa Sigma Kappa Fraternity.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 22, 2017, at 10:00 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Ulysses with Reverend Dennis Mason officiating. Burial will be the following day in Ellinwood. Any donations to the Lions Club in Wilfred’s name are greatly appreciated in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 405 W. Grant Ave. Ulysses, KS 67880.
